The Veterinary Emergency Center is proud to offer internal medicine services at its Cary Street location. Our new internal medicine specialist, Dr. Megen Daugherty, works to provide an increased level of diagnostic and treatment care for your beloved pets. Internal medicine often involves a combination of imaging and diagnostics in conjunction with an in-depth understanding of the inner workings of your pet’s body.
You may find need of her services when:
Your pet has signs of chronic illness, metabolic disease or problems with major internal organs (kidney, liver, lungs, ect.)
Your pet requires diagnostic evaluation or procedures leading up to a surgery.
Your pet needs specific types of diagnostic procedures like endoscopy and rhinoscopy.
Your pet has medical problems that may require ultrasound, CT or radiographically guided procedure (such as aspirate or biopsy) performed by board-certified internal specialists.
Your pet needs treatment for cancer.
Your Veterinarian may or may not be aware of these and other special services offered by the VEC. Please work with them to find the best possible treatment options for you beloved companion.

Dr. Megen Daugherty- Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine
Dr. Daugherty is a native of West Virginia. She attended college at Michigan State University and majored in zoology prior to admittance into the College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Daugherty graduated with honors from veterinary school in 2002 and completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Purdue University in 2003. During her internship, Dr. Daugherty developed an interest in internal medicine which prompted her to pursue specialty training. In the summer of 2003, Dr. Daugherty began a three year residency training and master’s degree program at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine which she completed in July 2006. Dr. Daugherty attained her board certification in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the specialty of Internal Medicine in August of 2006. She spent one year as a clinical instructor in community practice and internal medicine at Cornell University prior to moving to Richmond to join VEC. Dr. Daugherty is married to Dr. Kevin Winegardner, VEC’s board certified veterinary radiologist. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, reading, spending time with family & friends, as well as hiking, camping, and canoeing with her husband and “Audi” their English setter.
